The James W. and Kathleen Dalton Papers consist of the personal files and business records of engineer James W. Dalton, and correspondence and other materials created and/or collected by Kathleen "Mike" Dalton reflecting her interest and participation in activities of the Republican Party in Alaska. James W. Dalton's papers include personal correspondence and work log books; information on work done in Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 by the firm Arctic Contractors (1945-1953); information on the Alaska Development Board (1954), construction of a portion of the DEW Line (1954-1957), and projects carried out by the firm Exploration Services (1960s); and information on the Barrow Gas Field and the village of Barrow, Alaska. Kathleen "Mike" Dalton's papers include reading files, photographs, correspondence, memoranda, printed materials, reports, newsclippings, speech transcriptions, committee lists, election returns, and related materials dealing with the Republican Party of Alaska.

James W. Dalton (1913-1977), son of Alaskan transportation pioneer, trader, and explorer Jack Dalton, was born in Seattle, Washington. Though James spent his early childhood in Cordova, Alaska, the family moved back to Seattle in 1919. In 1935 James returned to Alaska to complete his college education, earning a bachelor of science degree in mining engineering from the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines (now University of Alaska Fairbanks) in 1937.
